Overview

Welcome to Django Starter Lab

Django Starter Lab begins the shift from small Python scripts into structured web projects.

You are not expected to understand the whole framework today.

This first lesson is orientation.

You will learn what Django is, why it exists, and how it uses the Python logic you already practiced.

Later lessons will move into project structure, routes, templates, models, admin, and forms.

The goal today is calm context: Django is a Python tool for building organized web applications.

Start with purpose

Understanding why Django exists makes the later pieces feel less random.

Explain

From Python scripts to web applications

In Python Builder Lab, you practiced logic in small scripts.

You used input, conditionals, loops, functions, lists, and dictionaries.

Django uses the same Python foundations in a web-application setting.

The learning path is now shifting from one script running locally into web projects that respond to browser requests.

A Django project can power lesson pages, business intake pages, dashboards, client portals, admin-managed content, and other structured software features.

The Python thinking remains useful. The environment changes.

Same Python, larger setting

Django does not replace Python. It gives Python a web application structure.

Explain

What a framework means

A framework is a set of patterns and tools that helps developers build common kinds of software without starting from nothing every time.

Django is a web framework.

That means it provides structure for building web applications with Python.

Developers often need pages, forms, routes, database-backed records, admin tools, and server-side logic.

Django gives those needs an organized place to live.

A framework does not remove the need to understand logic.

It helps put the logic into a repeatable structure.

Structure reduces repeated setup

Django exists because web apps often need the same kinds of parts again and again.

example

Request and response at a beginner level

A web request starts when a person asks for something in a browser.

Example: a visitor opens a business intake page.

The browser sends a request to the server.

Django receives the request.

Django runs the Python logic connected to that page.

Django chooses what response to send back.

The browser shows the result.

The response might be an HTML page, a form page, a dashboard, or another structured output.

Browser asks, server responds

Django sits on the server side and helps Python decide what response comes back.

example

Worked example: a simple intake page

Imagine a visitor opens a request-service page.

Step 1: The visitor's browser asks for /request-service/.

Step 2: Django matches that path to the Python logic for the page.

Step 3: The Python logic decides which content and form structure belongs on the page.

Step 4: Django returns the page response.

Step 5: The browser displays the page to the visitor.

Later, if the visitor submits a form, Django can receive that submitted information, validate it, save it, and show the next response.

Today, you only need the big idea: Django organizes the server-side work behind web pages and application features.

Django connects URLs to Python work

A route points to code that decides the response.

Practice

Beginner Django vocabulary

Django has vocabulary you will meet slowly.

Framework: a set of patterns and tools for building software.

Server-side logic: Python code that runs on the server before a response is sent back.

Request: what the browser asks the server for.

Response: what the server sends back.

Route or page path: the address pattern that leads to a page or feature.

Project: the larger Django codebase.

App: a focused part inside a Django project.

Admin area: a built-in staff-facing place for managing data.

Vocabulary will become concrete

You do not need every detail today. These words will get clearer as the track builds real examples.

Explain

How Django differs from small scripts

A small Python script usually runs from the command line.

It often has one flow from top to bottom.

Django responds to web requests.

A Django project is organized into web-facing parts, such as routes, views, templates, models, forms, and admin tools.

A script may ask for input in the terminal.

A Django page may receive information from a browser form.

Both still rely on Python thinking: variables, decisions, functions, data structures, clear flow, and debugging.

Django is different because it puts that logic inside a web application structure.

Scripts run. Web apps respond.

That distinction will help the next lessons make sense.

Wrap up

Misconceptions to avoid

Beginners often bring a few assumptions into Django.

Misconception 1: Django replaces Python. It does not. Django uses Python.

Misconception 2: Django is only for giant websites. It can also help with small business tools and internal portals.

Misconception 3: Frameworks remove the need to understand logic. They do not.

Misconception 4: Django is just design or styling. It is mostly server-side structure.

Misconception 5: Django is front-end JavaScript. It is not, although Django pages can include JavaScript later.

Misconception 6: You must understand the whole framework at once. You do not.

Summary: Django is a Python web framework, Django helps structure web application work, Django builds on the Python skills you already have, and understanding the purpose of Django comes before building full Django parts.
